Why is this important?
- Decodable reading helps students apply phonics skills in context, reinforcing their ability to decode words accurately and building confidence in their reading abilities.
- It builds fluency by providing practice with controlled vocabulary that matches their current skill level, ensuring steady progress.
In summary, decodable reading is crucial in our lessons, as it strengthens decoding skills, boosts confidence, and enhances reading fluency.
Unit 1
Decodable Reading
- 1. Cold read
First, have your student read through the text on their own, making sure they are tracking as they read. They can track with their finger, a pencil, the computer mouse, or anything you have on hand.
- 2. Echo Read
Next, read the text out loud, one sentence at a time. Then, have your student read the same sentence, tracking with their finger, doing their best to match your expression.
- 3. Independent read
Finally, have your student read through the entire text again. You should notice improvements in their reading fluency and accuracy after completing the cold read and the echo read.
