Instructions:
Print out the recording sheet. Have your student read the nonsense word on each slide. The “nonsense” words follow the rules of the English language and will tell us if your child knows the rules for decoding and not just memorization of words. The ability to decode is critical when meeting new words, they have never seen and can’t have memorized. The ability to decode quickly and fluently is a critical skill to be a strong reader. If you are unsure of how the word should be read, click the speaker and listen to the audio file. Mark each word as correct or incorrect. If you are in doubt at all it is better to mark it wrong and let your student. get extra practice learning that skill than to mark it right and possibly not get the practice or instruction needed in learning it.
After they read, they will be asked to spell.
Stop when they miss 8 out of 10 in a section.
Do NOT ask your student to read the section divider cards.
